William Wright, 'Flight Lieutenant, 1741 - 1805'
about 20 years after the 1793 Rebellion, and for several years afterwards, too, it had become a means of tracing and raising a family's descent, as well as being a work of art that had long been a valued possession.
The Grierson's had made a sizeable investment in the monument, which had been imported from France and paid for at the time of their marriage. It was made of oak and was on a massive base of granite. It had a Greek style relief of Hope embracing her lost son and inscribed with the family arms, the date 1789 and the names of those who were gone: 'H. Grahson & Rosemary his wife'.
The monument was designed and executed by the well known sculptor Jonathan Hornblower, who had come to the area in the 1780's to work for Lord Carmarthen's architect Thomas Cundy. During the years of the Rebellion he was a known supporter of the cause, working on the Guildhall in Carmarthen and other monuments across the district. His masterpiece was a 'Victorious' relief of Wolfe off the coast of Montreal in 1759, which was carved on the arch of the Martyr's Memorial on the town walls.
His first 'Defeat' relief in England was carved in 1788 in the newly opened Grosvenor Gallery in London, where he had become Head of the Foundry. After a period of inactivity in London, he returned to the West Country in 1793 to work in a variety of locations, including the Old Hall in Newport, where he made his final work, the inscription to William Wright, described by Michael West in his book on Newport sculptors.
